Connect one small-business workflow

The real value of Cowork appears when useful context no longer has to be copied into every chat. Connectors can bring in information from tools your business already uses, while plugins package connectors and repeatable skills around a job. Start with one workflow—not the whole company.

What you'll leave withRun one supervised, read-heavy business workflow with a narrow set of approved sources.
01

Understand what you are installing

A connector lets Claude work with a particular service. It inherits the access of the account you connect, so Claude cannot see data that account cannot see—but a broadly privileged account still creates broad access.

A plugin bundles task instructions, connectors, and sometimes specialized subagents. Anthropic's Claude for Small Business plugin includes workflows for weekly briefs, customer-reply drafts, CRM cleanup, campaign planning, hiring materials, invoice follow-up drafts, and finance preparation. Some workflows need particular connectors or third-party plans.

  • Install only plugins and connectors you recognize and trust.
  • Read the requested permissions before authorizing an account.
  • Prefer a role-limited business account over an owner's unrestricted login.
  • Connect only the source required for the workflow you are testing.
02

Install and narrow the Small Business plugin

In Claude, open Customize, choose Plugins, select the plus button, and install Small Business. Run its onboarding skill so Claude can learn the approved basics about the company and the tools you intend to use. Review what it proposes before connecting anything.

Begin with a workflow that mostly reads, compiles, and drafts. A Monday brief using a calendar and a limited CRM view is easier to review than a workflow that changes accounting records or contacts customers.

A deliberately narrow first connection

Workflow: Monday owner brief

Allowed sources: this week's business calendar and read-only pipeline view

Output: one-page document with priorities, meetings, stalled leads, and open questions

Prohibited actions: no emails, CRM edits, calendar changes, invoices, or payments

Owner: operations lead verifies every customer name, date, and pipeline amount

03

Run one real task under supervision

You can invoke an installed skill from Cowork or describe the job in plain language. Include the time period, approved sources, output structure, and permission boundary even when the plugin already knows the general workflow.

Watch the first runs. Confirm that Claude reads only the expected sources, uses the correct date range, distinguishes a missing value from zero, and shows where important numbers came from. A polished report can still contain a wrong amount or an outdated status.

Monday brief request

Create a Monday brief for August 17–21 using only the business calendar and the approved pipeline view.

Include: this week's meetings, leads with no activity for 7+ days, deadlines, and five owner priorities.

Show the source and as-of date for every pipeline amount. Put uncertainties in an Open questions section.

Create a draft document only. Do not message anyone or change any source system.

Before starting, repeat the assignment and ask what you still need to know.

04

Keep decisions with the right person

The Small Business plugin's documented workflows stage and propose work for approval. Keep that review boundary intact. Claude can prepare a cash view, contract summary, customer reply, or campaign plan; the business owner or qualified professional remains responsible for the decision and any external action.

Disconnect tools you are no longer testing, and revisit permissions when an employee changes roles. A useful connection is not automatically a permanent connection.

Try it yourself

Pilot one connected brief

Choose a weekly deliverable whose important facts you can verify in under ten minutes.

  1. 1

Install the Claude for Small Business plugin and review its included skills and requested connectors.

  2. 2

Choose one read-heavy workflow and authorize only its required source—or use a safe file export instead.

  3. 3

Write the allowed sources, prohibited actions, reviewer, and five-item output structure before running it.

  4. 4

Spot-check every name, date, amount, and recommendation against the original source.

  5. 5

Record corrections and run it twice more under supervision before expanding access.

Keep this

Connect the smallest useful slice of the business, prove the workflow, and expand access only when the evidence earns it.
